Research at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Turku

Research at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Turku is active, multidisciplinary, innovative and internationally recognized. The Faculty of Medicine is committed to reinforcing the status of top-level research in Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing Science. Its postgraduate training programmes are designed to educate new researchers with the capacity to significantly promote their disciplines.

Centres of Excellence in Research (CoE)

The Academy of Finland provides funding for basic high-level research and seeks to promote the development of creative research environments in Finland. Its programme of National Centres of Excellence (CoE) is an important means of financing Finnish research.

At the Faculty of Medicine there are three CoEs:

Research Programmes

Based on an international evaluation, the Faculty of Medicine together with the BioCity Turku nominated five thematic research programmes to profile the research activities:

Recent developments in the Faculty include the establishment of two new core facilities, Turku Center for Disease Modelling and Turku Clinical Research Centre. The Faculty has formed a strategic alliance with Turku University Hospital and the Hospital District of Southwest Finland.

Graduate Schools

The Faculty of Medicine hosts six graduate schools funded by the Ministry of Education. The aims of the graduate school system include improved quality of postgraduate education, shortening of the time of doctoral students to complete their degree requirements and increased international cooperation in doctoral training.
